Governance Essentials Program Overview
Program Eligibility
The Governance Essentials Program for Directors of
Not-for-Profit Organizations (NFP) admissions policy has been developed
with a belief that positive learning environments are best achieved when
a class is constructed by balancing diversity, experience, and the
ability of participants to contribute positively within the group.
To be eligible for admission into the NFP Program, applicants are
required to have either board experience, senior management experience,
or professional experience. Preference will be given to applicants who
have demonstrated experience with, or a desire to become involved in,
the governance of not-for-profit organizations. Space is limited and
there is no guarantee of admission into the program. Preference will be
given to those with the most applicable experience and to address issues
of diversity within the class setting.
Cancellation Policy
Applicants are liable for the full course fee once they are notified
that the admissions committee has accepted their application for
admission.
Refunds will be given for cancellations received in writing to
ICD’s Director of Education no later than 28 days before the start
date of the course subject to an administration fee of $250 (plus
applicable taxes). Cancellations received in writing less than 28 days
and no later than 14 days before the start date of the course will be
issued a full credit on account to be applied to another offering within
one calendar year. No refunds will be provided for cancellations
received less than 14 days before the start date of the course.
Non-attendance will incur the full course fee.
Should the ICD need to cancel or postpone a course offering,
applicants will be issued a full refund.

“I had the opportunity to complete the three-day Not-For-Profit
Governance Essentials Program when it was held
in Vancouver last spring (2008).
The program offered some great insights into board best practices in
governance and organization. I particularly benefited from the
discussions on board engagement, but was also enlightened by the quality
of participants from other boards and the sharing of common problems and
solutions.
While all of us have busy schedules, the timing and locations of the
NFP Governance Essentials Program make this program very
accessible.
I would encourage executive directors and board members of NFP
organizations to complete this course for both your personal benefit and
the boards you participate on.”
