eyes on education
In their own words...
(Notes from Peter Watson, ICD Edmonton Chair and participant at the first
Directors Education Program offered in Edmonton)
Back to School may be an annual routine for our children and grandchildren - but for my classmates and I, who form the inaugural class of the ICD Directors Education Program in Edmonton, it is obviously less frequent, but admittedly more special. While most of us faithfully complete our annual continuing education requirements in order to maintain professional qualifications, attendance at four, intense three-full-day modules is a rare privilege.
The first module of the DEP, held at the University of Alberta School of Business, was completed in early November this year, and the roster comprised twenty-five experienced board members, CEOs and senior advisors to boards of directors, from Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec. The high-calibre mix of professors (two each from the University of Alberta School of Business and the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management) and ICD Executives-in-Residence, created an unmistakable and refreshing synergy.
In
Guiding Strategic Direction and Risks, this first of four modules looked at how to define and set strategies, followed by an analysis and discussion on their associated risks, and finally, on decision making processes to bring them to life. The teaching model is straight-forward and effective: Our professors set out the relevant academic theories and had us apply those theories to case studies. This amounted to letting us test the theories by bringing our own experience to bear on the cases.
Throughout the module, I couldn’t help but recall how similar this experience was to my Executive Management program at the Harvard Graduate School of Business. Then, as now, and right here in Edmonton, I was delighted to see how different people could read the same case study and propose such a variety of credible solutions. In my view, the Directors Education Program uses this approach wisely and effectively - and what a wonderful consequence to broaden your mind in this way.
By the end of the first module, the energy around the room said nothing if it did not make us all look forward to the next three; namely Financial Strategy, Risks & Disclosure; Guiding Human Performances and Enterprise Risk, and Directing Extreme and Unique Events (e.g.: M&A, Technology, Operations and other crises).
