Advisory Boards – Adding Another Layer of Expertise to Your Organization

Nobody can build a great business alone. Whether it is a startup or an established industry leader, having access to high-quality advice can enhance an organization’s odds of success. While great advice can be obtained from a board of directors, consultants or networks, increasingly, attention is being given to advisory boards.

An effective advisory board or committee, properly composed and structured, can provide non-binding but informed guidance and serve as a tremendous ally in the quest for superior corporate governance. An advisory board is a collection of individuals who bring unique knowledge and skills, which augment those of the formal board of directors, to more effectively guide the organization forward.

Join Mark Dufresne, as he calls upon his extensive experience with advisory boards to discuss some of the key benefits and challenges that come with incorporating advisory boards into your governance structure. Mark will examine a variety of questions including:
  • Why establish an advisory board and what do I want from it?
  • What is the purpose of an advisory board?
  • How can the advisory board be structured to maximize its contribution to my organization’s success?
  • How do I select individuals for a high-functioning advisory board?
  • What factors lead to a successful advisory board experience – for both the organization and the individual?
  • What are some of the potential challenges associated with an advisory board?
PRESENTER

Mark Dufresne is a passionate leader, a talented retailer and a determined entrepreneur with an appetite for growth and improvement.

Over the past 24 years, Mark made a lasting impact on the Canadian furniture landscape as the leader of The Dufresne Group (TDG). In his past position of CEO, he grew the company from a single storefront to an international operation of over 180 storefronts within five brands and a strong partnership with the Dufresne Spencer Group (DSG) in the U.S.A.

Today, its Canadian scope includes 14 Dufresne Furniture stores, 24 Ashley HomeStore locations and 133 storefronts operating as part of the Dufresne Retail Solutions Group (dRSG). It is also the supplier of furniture and appliances for the North West Company, which includes 140 stores in Northern Canada. In 2012, TDG partnered to create the Dufresne Spencer Group (DSG) based out of Memphis, Tennessee. Today, DSG has 43 stores,  is the largest Ashley HomeStore licensee, and is number 35 on the Top 100 U.S. Furniture Retailers list. Combining their operations, TDG & DSG employ approximately 3,000 team members.

Mark is an advocate for education, hard work and commitment. He is a member of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO) and participates publicly and personally in various volunteer activities in the U.S.A and in Canada.
