Different is Better: Achieving Diversity in the Boardroom

Studies show that companies with diverse boards bring new ways of thinking, are less prone to taking risks, and achieve superior financial results and corporate performance. Yet, according to the 2018 Conference Board of Canada Report Card, women now represent only one quarter of FP500 seats while 15 per cent of FP500 companies have no women on their boards. Achieving board diversity targets has been a challenge. Despite the evident benefits of diversity, leading or supporting a board that has experienced an influx of diverse members may present new challenges as the boardroom culture shifts.

Red River Mutual Insurance is a Manitoba-based business that has been protecting the livelihoods of Canadians on the Prairies for over 140 years. In recent years, the company made a deliberate choice to diversify its board of directors to better reflect the communities it serves. The company is well on the path of reaching its diversity goals.

In this event, we will engage in a conversation with Brian Esau, Red River Mutual’s President & Chief Executive Officer, to learn how the company approached its diversity mission, and the opportunities and challenges created by a new diverse board

Since joining the company in 2008, Brian Esau (FCPA, FCMA, ICD.D) has led the execution of Red River Mutual’s Strategic Plan which has included a five-year technology plan, a significant company re-brand, and an overhaul of the company's customer service approach. During that time, Brian has helped drive annual written premiums from $49 million to $125 million by prioritizing building relationships. In 2015, Brian was honoured to accept the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Medium Business award on behalf of Red River Mutual.

As a business leader with more than 30 years of experience achieving proven strategic success, Brian has demonstrated an enthusiastic and innovative management style to accomplish Red River Mutual's short-term goals and long-term vision.
