Nature-related Risks and Opportunities: An Emerging Imperative for Canadian Boards

Canadian ecosystems that have historically shaped the country’s identity and underpinned its economy are increasingly under strain. In March 2026, Prime Minister Carney released A Force of Nature: Canada’s Strategy to Protect Nature, which explicitly recognizes that Canada’s natural capital represents both a responsibility to steward and a competitive advantage to leverage. At a time of growing nature-related regulatory scrutiny, litigation exposure, and investor action, integrating nature-related risks and opportunities into governance is now central to safeguarding and growing competitiveness and long-term value.

Jointly with the Commonwealth Climate and Law Initiative, the Canada Climate Law Initiative and PwC Canada, the Institute of Corporate Directors is proud to launch Asking Better Questions on Nature for Canadian Board Directors (“Canada ABQ Guide”). Adapted from the popular original guide co-authored by the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), it is designed to help Canadian board members surface the decision-useful information they need to ensure that nature-related issues are appropriately incorporated into their organizations’ governance, risk management and strategic responsibilities.

In this webinar you will:

  • Learn about the Canada ABQ Guide’s key insights and recommendations, and why they matter for board oversight of nature-related risks, opportunities and disclosure.
  • Clarify directors’ legal duties and board-level responsibilities under Canadian law as they relate to nature-related risks, sustainability matters and related disclosures.
  • Explore emerging trends, regulatory developments and governance practices that are shaping board responsibilities and expectations in Canada.
  • Gain practical, board-ready approaches for integrating nature-related considerations into governance, enterprise risk management, strategy discussions and oversight processes.
  • Discover questions directors can ask management to strengthen decision-making, improve organizational resilience and support long-term value creation.
