Climate change is affecting all sectors of the economy and the depth of its impacts will continue to grow. Boards must proactively integrate of climate considerations into oversight of enterprise risk and strategy to position their organizations for long-term success and avoid being at a disadvantage.

However, advancing this imperative is a complex undertaking and directors are grappling with where to begin, how to move forward and when to seek guidance. Important considerations such as how to proactively integrate climate change into the board agenda, ensuring the board has access to the necessary expertise and understanding why non-high-emitting sectors must take a proactive approach are top of mind.

Co-hosted by the ICD and Chapter Zero Canada*, Fundamentals of Climate Governance, a self-directed, foundational module, will introduce you to the World Economic Forum’s Principles on Effective Climate Governance and progress your climate governance learning journey to enhance your contributions to climate change discussions in the boardroom.

*The ICD is host of Chapter Zero Canada, the Canadian Chapter of the World Economic Forum’s Climate Governance Initiative. Chapter Zero Canada’s mandate is to mobilize the corporate director community through education based on the World Economic Forum’s Climate Governance Principles, as contextualized for Canada, on strategies to embed climate considerations into Canadian boardrooms’ strategic decision making.

Format

Fundamentals of Climate Governance is a self-directed, asynchronous eLearning module of 40+ minutes in length. Access will be granted for a period of 15 days following registration.

Objectives

  • Participation in this interactive, eLearning module will help you:
    • Recognize why boards must take a proactive approach climate change oversight.
    • Understand how overseeing climate change links with directors’ fiduciary duty and why it necessitates a unique approach.
    • Demonstrate why climate change governance should be integrated with oversight of strategy, risk, performance, and reporting.
    • Identify steps to ensure your board is sufficiently educated on climate change and assess whether they could benefit from external resources.
    • Determine whether additional skills or expertise are required on you board to effectively oversee climate change.
    • Explore different structures and frameworks appropriate for board oversight of climate change.

    Board Oversight of Climate Change Multi-module blended online course:
    Module 1: Integration of Climate Change into Oversight of Risk Management
    Module 2: Integration of Climate Change into Oversight of Strategy
    Module 3: Overseeing Climate Change Communication and Reporting
    Each module includes three to five hours of independent learning, a four-hour live, instructor-led session and supplemental resources. Learners gain access to an alumni portal following completion of the third module.

    • Optimize their organizations’ long-term competitiveness in the context of climate change
    • Augment their contribution to boardroom discussions on climate change reporting
