Pathways to Business Partnerships with Indigenous Peoples in Canada

Enhancing business and economic connections between the corporate Canada and Indigenous communities can build trust and meaningful engagement on the journey towards truth and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples in Canada and provide new opportunities and economic benefits to both. Included in the calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada is one calling on the corporate sector in Canada to, among other things, commit to meaningful consultation, building respectful relationships, obtaining free, prior and informed consent and providing equitable access to employment and long term benefits from economic development.

Building bridges take time, and effort. It requires trust. And the journey begins with a shared commitment to communication and mutual understanding, and to the exploration of intersections of mutually beneficial opportunities. However, both partners will be stronger for having invested in their relationship. Partnerships with the Indigenous economy may involve investment, co-ownership or development, licensing, subcontracting and supplier engagements. While there may be upfront costs, successful relationships can be not only financially rewarding but can also strengthen our communities.

Half the challenge is knowing where to begin. In this session our expert panel will share their experiences and suggestions on ways boards of Canadian organizations can encourage their organizations to explore new partnerships and investments with Indigenous peoples.
