Submission Guidelines

Director Journal accepts articles, features, and interviews on a non-fee basis, except where commissioned by the ICD. Our audience comprises aspiring and seasoned directors, as well as C-suite and senior executives from for-profit, not-for-profit and Crown corporation boards.

Submission guidelines for Director Journal include:
  • All submissions are subject to the Editor’s approval and the ICD reserves the right to refuse and/or postpone publication due to editorial and space considerations.  All contributions selected for publication by the editorial team may be edited for clarity of thought, grammar, style, and brevity.
  • Prior to beginning work on your submission, please provide a brief outline of the topic (approx. 100 words), including key points that illustrate the article’s significance to directors, its timeliness and/or relevance to corporate governance. 
  • Please submit your story idea to Simon Avery, Editor at savery@icd.ca
  • We do have several themed issues throughout the year, which may be relevant for something you are contemplating. Please contact the Editor for more information.
  • Content must be original and relate to corporate governance issues, offering clear value and insight for directors. Content should include specific examples and concrete learning for readers. Articles should not be promotional in nature.
  • Submission length can range from 500 to 1,200 words max. You may include small tables, graphs and charts as appropriate.
  • The preferred style of the magazine is informative, streamlined and straightforward. Please minimize legal and technical jargon, as well as academic and theoretical content; spell out all acronyms on the first reference. Promotional, vague and unsubstantiated statements will be edited out.
  • Articles may be submitted in English or French or both languages. The majority of content in Director Journal is in English with some French content.
  • Preference is given to articles written by sitting directors on for-profit, not-for-profit and Crown corporation boards.
  • Each issue will include two articles authored by a non-sitting director from a sponsor organization or a professional service provider.
  • All articles should include a short bio of the author (max 40 words) and a high-resolution (300 dpi) JPEG image of the author to run with the byline. Promotion of services, email address, and website links is not permitted.
